What to look for when hiring customer-facing staff

Listen for clarity, patience and the ability to stay calm with an annoyed caller. Ask candidates to handle a short role-play, such as a caller whose order has not arrived, and watch whether they listen, note the details and say what happens next. For telesales, ask about targets they have carried and confirm them with a reference.

Be clear about hours, targets, breaks and how performance is reviewed before you make an offer. People stay where expectations are written down.
