A patient care attendant helps with mobility (getting in and out of bed, walking, positioning a bed-bound patient), personal hygiene and bathing, feeding and meal support, toilet assistance, and general companionship through the day. For patients recovering from illness or surgery, or living with limited mobility, this hands-on daily support is often what makes staying at home realistic.

Attendants also keep an eye on the small things: whether the patient is eating properly, seems in discomfort, or needs something a nurse or doctor should know about, and can flag it to family or, where a nurse is also involved, to them.

This role suits patients recovering from illness or injury who need daily hands-on help but not clinical tasks, elderly family members who can manage medically but need support with day-to-day activities, and anyone who shouldn't be left alone for long stretches. It's non-medical support, so it doesn't extend to injections, wound care or medication administration.
